PRINCE FREDERICK, MD (December 13, 1999) – An exciting, innovative, self-exploration program for youth is coming to Calvert County, sponsored by the local chapter of Concerned Black Men (CBM).

CBM’s ‘Real Life’ program is intended to expose youth to some of life’s extremes with the desired impact of giving them greater insight into themselves and the possible repercussions of their actions. "Real Life’ exercises will assist youth in developing better decision-making skills.

During sessions, ‘Real Life’ participants will visit jails, trauma centers, funeral homes, drug rehabilitation facilities and similar institutions to get an inside view at how their lives could be changed by engaging in risky behaviors. There will also be an outdoor adventure component to the program that will test participants’ trust in others, self-reliance, self-esteem and teamwork skills.

CBM’s ‘Real Life’ program is geared for ages 10 and up. Parental permission is necessary for participation in the program. ‘Real Life’ participants will be fully supervised during sessions. Interested individuals should call (410) 326-1993 or (301) 855-0251 for registration and other information.

The Concerned Black Men (CBM) of Calvert County, part of an international, non-profit organization, came into existence nearly four years ago following discussions held by African-American men in the county. The chapter’s mission, in part, is to provide a holistic approach to services that support and strengthen the African-American family. Youth are a primary focus of CBM’s mentoring and other outreach programs.
